I have a long, personal and emotional attachment with the Wadali Brothers as we started our journey almost at the same time. The brothers first performed in the famous Hari Ballav Sangeet Sammelan, Jalandhar in the year 1974. These street plays were popular in the villages of Punjab. While Puranchand was a wrestler for 25 years before taking to singing, Pyarelal used to dance as Krishna in Krishan Leelas in their native village Guru Ki Wadali. They popularised the sufi kalams of Sultan Bahu, Amir Khusro, Baba Bulleh Shah, Shah Hussain and Heer Waris Shah with their high-pitched and soulful alaps in classical style. Pyarelal gave a new dimension to this song by blending Punjabi folk tunes. The brothers’ shows were never complete without the rendition of the timeless‘Dama dum mast kalandar’. Together they created magic with their distinct approach to music.Ī blend of traditional and modern gayaki, Pyarelal established his own style mixing Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi and Sindhi. Pyarelal learnt music from his elder brother Puranchand, who was trained by Patiala Gharana stalwarts Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Pt. They performed extensively across India and outside. The brothers began their musical journey at Harballah temple in Jalandhar. Besides, Sufi, they excelled in the rendition of bhajan, Kaafiyan and ghazal.
